I'm a bit late as this is a recap of the weekend before this past one but, no matter. It's a busy time with the holidays coming up so you can forgive me.
After my night out with high school friends, I then had a end of year holiday party lunch with my Women for Winesense group. We had a fantastic non-stop food frenzy at Cafe Michelina in Hoboken. There were some interesting wines we chose to go with the food and some were terrific.
As we always start with a sparkler we had the
Il Fagetto Prosecco - Veneto, Italy. While I usually love Prosecco this one left something to be desired. Although seemingly a nice aperetif with its lightness, it really didn't have enough bubbles to make it a pleasant sparkling wine. We'll forget about that one. We then had the
Angela Rosa Greco di Tufo 2007- Campania, Italy. A nice crisp amd lemony nose and taste as soon as I saw the fried calamari being served I knew this would be a perfect match. The calamari was light and crisp and the wine's citrus notes completed the flavors.
Next was probably the favorite wine of the day. The
Terra de Vinto Pertale Aglianico- Campania, Italy. An intense color and nose the wine had lots of fruitiness with firm tannins that rounded out the flavors.
Spadafora Monreale Syrah 2005- Sicily, Italy had an intensely dark color with good black cherry flavors and a bit of smoke. I found this wine a bit harsh at first but the tannins relaxed a bit after some time in the glass.
It wasn't my favorite but some really loved that wine. And, finally, the
Apollonio Salice Salentino 2003- Puglia, Italy. A deep rich wine with a good amount of licorice (that I love) this was a nice and simple table wine.
Overall, the wines were good choices for the meal that we were having and I am glad to have tried them all.
Cheers,
The Wining Woman
