Entry for December 09, 2008 - Winter White
photo
It might be winter and time for big full bodied reds but dinner lastnight at the Ocean Grill in NYC called for a nice crisp white. We had the Loimer Lois Gruner Veltliner 2007 - Austria that I knew would be a nice pairing with all our different dishes. Yes, we were all having some form of seafood but the sauces and accompaniments were all different. Thankfully, the restaurant had the wine at a nice temperature that wasn't overly chilled so I was able to smell its aromas immediately. Nice citrus with lemon and grapefruit that were prevalent on the palate. The wine had incredible acidity and a very slight effervescence on the tongue. I loved it with my chopped salad that had kalamata olives, capers and roasted peppers. The crispness of the wine was just such a nice balance. We liked the wine so much with our appetizers that we ordered another of the same with our entrees. I had a special Dorade fish with mushrooms and olives and some grilled shrimp as well. Again, perhaps because the chef was very good with balancing flavors of his dishes, the wine was yet another component that perfectly complimented the food. The restaurant cost for this wine was $35.00 but, retails for about $14.00.
Cheers,
