Entry for November 16, 2008- Go Gewurtz

Gewurtztraminer is probably the most difficult grape name to say but one of the most enjoyable and under-rated. After spending a few days in the Finger Lakes region of NY on Seneca Lake and tasting some amazing Gewurtz wines, I was convinced that this will be the next big wine coming out of that region (after Riesling.) All the wines I tasted were crisp and gentle without any overwhelming sweetness as is expected from the stereotypical German ones. Since then, I have been accumulating Gewurtz from different areas with the most recent being from the Alt0-Adige region of Italy. Tonight, paired with sushi and sashimi, I could think of nothing better than the Girlan Gewurtztraminer Aime' 2006. Tons of apricot and pear along with that lovely floral quality of Gewurtz. There was nothing too cloying or sweet in this wine at all. I am looking forward to tasting more and reporting back on these quality wines.
Cheers,
