The other night, I met a friend (fellow wine geek) of mine at the wine bar Wined Up in NYC. It's located on the 2nd floor of the restaurant Punch on Broadway and 21st Street. Great location that's for sure and although it's been there for some time, this was my first visit. As it turns out, my friend was familiar with the place since she had studied and was friends with the original Sommelier who worked there. She since moved away but the Sommelier there now was another aquaintance of hers. She thought it would be a good central location for us to meet and also to possibly catch up with her colleague. The space is very nice and comfortable with an entire wall (or 2) covered in wine bottles. Besides the wine list they have a small menu of tapas type foods. We chose to order wine by the glass so I never actually looked at the entire wine list. But, the by the glass list included around 30 different wines organized by style. My first order was a Portugese white and my friend's a Sicilian White. To my amazement, the wines were served in the Riedel O wine glasses.. those are the ones without the stems. We were both a bit unhappy about this since these are not the glass for wine pros. When I asked the Sommelier about the glasses, he said the designer of the wine bar chose them to fit in with the overall decor and modern design of the space. Okay, I get that to a point. But, this is supposed to be a wine bar.. meant for true wine lovers who want big stemmed wine glasses. We were told you can ask for a stemmed glass and get one that they'll bring up from the downstairs restaurant. That's fine but I think a wine bar should serve wine in the appropriate glass without having to ask. Never mind.. we ordered a few more glasses of wine and used the Riedel O glasses.
Cheers,
The Wining Woman
