There's a prison in Portugal situated in the heart of wine country just Northeast of Lisbon where the prisoners get to make wine. With over 66 acres of vineyards the prison has produced wine since 1944 with award winning results. Not all the 480 or so prisoners get to have this "time out." Those that do are carefully selected based on their sentences, their behavior that sort of thing. Armed guards watch over them but even they are there to give technical advice about the vines more than keeping a security watch. There are no chemicals used in the wine and the cheap labor keeps prices low. All the wines are hand harvested as well. So, if you come across a Portugese wine with a label that says "made in Alcoentre prison" you'll know it's for real.
