Entry for July 30, 2008- Fun in the Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes region in New York is a gorgeous area that is becoming a wine lover's mecca. Some even say that it could be the next "Napa" and after my visit this past week I can certainly understand why. I spent a couple of nights at the Glenora Inn in Dundee on Seneca Lake. Driving along Route 14 from Watkins Glen, the most southern point on the lake, I counted 6 wineries alone in that  short 10 minute drive to the inn. More and more vineyards are being planted all the time as well with about 36 around the lake at this time.

The region is known for their Rieslings but they are trying to make a mark with their reds as well. I was a bit wary to try them but was happy to find some excellent Cabernet Franc and even Pinot Noir, especially at Lakewood Vineyards, Watkins Glen. While the tastings off the "menu" were enjoyable it was meeting the winemaker, Chris Stamp, and tasting his 2007 Pinot Noir in the tank that made our trip. It had a beautiful ruby color and a nose that was intense with cherries, strawberry and earth.  Thinking it might taste harsh I was surprised to find it completely balanced and intense with fruit, toastiness and a long lasting finish with no rough tannin at all. In my opinion, this wine was ready for bottling and I had only wished we could get some to take home. Now, I'll just have to wait like everyone else.

Chris also makes a fabulous Gewurtztraminer (that is in the bottle and I did buy.) This is definitely another grape to watch in this region as the diffrerent ones I tried reminded me of wines from Alsace. The Lakewood Vineyards 2006 Gewurtz had  refreshing grapefruit and spice with a long lingering finish. Definitely a wine I am going to enjoy with sushi.

Cheers,
