My wine refrigerator was looking void of white wines last week so I quickly remedied that by buying an assorted case. It doesn't take long to start dwindling again especially when it's a hot weekend at home and sipping wine on the patio is just so nice. This weekend I had 2 Sauvignon Blancs from my inventory and another out at a restaurant that I hadn't had before. The first one was the
Alan Scott 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, NZ. As you would expect from a Marlborough SB, this wine was intensely aromatic with lots of grapefruit and herbal notes. The acidity and tartness was a bit overpowering on my palate but it still was a nice and refreshing sipping wine. Approx cost $15.00. Next was the
Casa Julia 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, Maule Valley, Chile. This one, I thoroughly enjoyed. Fresh, fruity with nice acidity and a smooth, long finish. I have always enjoyed Chilean red wines and now their whites are making an impression too. I'll be buying more. Approx cost: $9.00 Finally, I had a glass of
Chateau Ste. Michelle Sauvignon Blanc - Columbia Valley, Washington. The wine was served too chilled to get much from the nose at first, but soon I was smelling and tasting pear and minerals. It had nice acidity and was light and fresh. Approx cost: $10.00.
I realize now that the "cat pee" and "gooseberry" characteristics made so popular by Marlborough are not that enjoyable after all. I am now interested in trying more SBs from other areas.
Cheers,
The Wining Woman
