Entry for June 5, 2008- New York ...New York... a wonderful Wine Town

Manhattan is getting its own winery. Well, actually, it will be one of those winemaking facilities where you buy a membership and become a "barrel owner" and can make your own wine. Called City Winery, there will also be a dinner nightclub open to the public.

These winemaking places are getting very popular in the tri-state area and other states so why not Manhattan. The facility will process about 120 tons of grapes. Membership comes in different levels ranging from $5000-$15,000 per year. Cost of grapes,  labeling will be extra. The basic ($5000 fee) gives you a 50 gallon American oak barrel, 4 classes taught by winemakers, and member only wine markets where you can swap wines with other "winemakers." Depending on the choice of grapes, barrels, labels this membership level will produce about 250 bottles between $25- $40 each. Grapes will come from all around New York (Finger Lakes and Long Island,) Washington State, Oregon and California's Central Coast. ) For more information have a look at www.citywinery.com
