Headed off to our favorite Japanese/sushi restaurant lastnight I needed to bring some wine. Now, normally with sushi we'll get a Riesling or Pinot Gris but I have neither of those in my wine refrigerator. What I did have was the Bastianich Tocai Friulano 2006 and since I recently heard that the Tocai Friulano grape could be related to the Sauvignon Blanc grape in some way, I thought this could make a nice choice. I couldn't have been more...right!! It was an incredible wine. Lovely golden color, tons of peach and pear on the nose and palate.. good body...really delicious on its own. Then, I had a taste with my sashimi. A match made in heaven.. the flavors were strong enough for the fish and really created an amazing taste sensation with a long and lingering finish. I was so excited to find another wine besides the usual to pair with Japanese food.
To put the icing on the cake, I found out that this wine was served to the pope this past weekend and now there is a huge demand for it. What can I say?
Cheers,
